Ned Vizzini: the bestselling author
How would it like being in a world where stories come to life? Fortunately we can get into that world by reading Ned Vizzini’s “House of Secrets”.
The bestselling author wrote his first book from the trilogy, in which three kids move into a creepy house in San Francisco, owned by a writer, Denver Kristoff. When they anger the wrong person, their house gets banished with into a world where Kristoff’s creepy stories come to life.
But Ned is also working on a new TV show called Believe, in which a 10-year-old girl with supernatural powers named Bo gets paired up with a hardened ex-convict and sent on a mission to help people.
In a conversation with The Outsider Argentina, Ned spoke about his beginnings, the process of writing on TV, and his newest trilogy “House of Secrets”.
How did you become interested in writing?
I have always been an imitator. When I was a kid, I would play a video game and then try to design a video game. Or see a painting and then try to paint. Writing turned out to be the art form where it was easiest for me to experience something and then do it myself.
How is it like writing a screenplay such as “Teen Wolf”? Do you have to work with a group of writers?
Writing for TEEN WOLF (or any television show) involves 6 to 12 writers and a bunch of assistants. You get together in a room and talk about what the show is going to be, and then you break off to write each episode in turn. It’s a great process, less lonely than writing books.
What can you tell us about the upcoming TV show “Believe”? What can we expect from it?
BELIEVE is about a 10-year-old girl with supernatural powers named Bo who gets paired up with a hardened ex-convict and sent on a mission to help people. I can tell you it’s beautifully directed — the first episode was done by Alfonso Cuarón — so it looks different from anything on TV. You can expect powerful emotional moments and just plain powerful moments involving Bo’s abilities.
How is it like being a bestselling author?
It’s very stressful to be a success. I don’t recommend it.
What is “House of Secrets” about?
HOUSE OF SECRETS is the story of three kids — the Walkers — who move into a creepy house in San Francisco that is owned by an even creepier writer, Denver Kristoff. When the Walker kids anger the wrong person, their house gets banished with into a world where all of Kristoff’s creepy stories come to life. Then they have to find their way home while facing challenges like this:
[Fat Jagger, the colossus from House of Secrets]
How did you and Chris Columbus come up with the idea of the novel?
Chris Columbus came up with it as a screenplay more than ten years ago! He was jogging by his house in San Francisco and he got this vision of a house floating in the ocean (they have these beautiful houses in San Francisco that look like this). Then he thought, What if that floating house got attacked by a pirate ship?
Which were the reactions from the readers so far?
We have a lot of responses from readers on Facebook who want to know when Book Two is coming out! All I can say is that we’re working on it and it will come out in 2014!
How was it like working with Chris Columbus, the director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, a man who also knows about the fantasy genre?
Working with Chris is fantastic. He has an incredible imagination and he’s a very fast writer. I can send him a chapter and get it back the same day!
“House of Secrets” is going to be a trilogy, have you started to write the second book or do you have any idea of what is going to be about?
We are almost done with the second book. It’s going to be about the temptations that tear families apart, and the loyalties that keep them together.
Would you like to make a movie from “House of Secrets”?
A HOUSE OF SECRETS movie would be great, but right now I am just focused on the books! You can think of them as movies if you like. Handheld movies that fit in your mind.
