Kuya, the brothers of music

Life is short. That is why we should live every moment to the fullest. We should appreciate what we have. This is the main message of the newest song “Stay Here” of Kuya, the R&B band.

The name Kuya was carefully chosen, because it is a term used as sign of respect to an older brother, and the band is formed by two pairs of brothers: Johann and Jayson and Sammy and Bobby.

In a conversation with The Outsider Argentina, Kuya spoke about their beginning in early 90’s, the reunion in 2014 and the creation of their new album.

How did the band start?

Sammy and Johann met performing in the Canadian cast of Miss Saigon. They both loved to sing R&B and decided to form the group KUYA. Johann’s brother Jayson joined the group first and then Sammy’s brother Bobby shortly after.

You were formed in early 90’s and you were reunited in 2014, in which moment are you now as a group?

We are currently in the studio working on our new album.

What does the word “Kuya” stands for?

Kuya in the filipino language is a term used as sign of respect to an older brother. The name was perfect given the two sets of brothers.

What kind of music do you play?

Our music is Alternative R&B. We love R&B but approach it differently than contemporary R&B.

What is your source of inspiration when you write your music?

We would say life experience, conversation and relationships. Sometimes just getting on the keyboard and whatever comes to mind and just going with it. That’s the best part of creating music. Anything goes!

What is “Stay Here” about?

The song essentially is about living every moment to the fullest because life is short. Each day should be a day of appreciating what we have now, and not taking life for granted. So we must continue living in the present.

How was it like shooting your first video?

Our very first video was shot in 2003 “Southern Girl” It was a lot of fun. We had a lot of family and friends in the video and it was exciting to release a visual to our single. This video we did for “Stay Here” was even more special to us since we had been apart for so long. It allowed us to be reunited to once again express the journey and the real life experience we had gone through while being apart.

What can you tell us about “Kuya Productions”?

Bobby and Sammy established Kuya Productions shortly after Kuya the group took a hiatus. They have produced on many huge international projects including Nelly, Mase, Ginuwine, Jesse McCartney and Big Time Rush.

Which are the future projects of Kuya?

There’s a lot that is being talked about. Definitely a full length album is in the works. We would like to do some shows and perform our new material live! To be honest, we just want to be able to continue to keep on creating timeless music our fans can enjoy.
